application process

additional info & FAQ's

Families/individuals in need of decent, affordable housing apply for Habitat’s Homeownership Program. The Family Selection Committee selects applicants based on three criteria:

  • The applicant’s level of need.
  • Their willingness to partner.
  • Their ability to pay an affordable mortgage through an affordable payment plan.

Mon Valley Habitat’s homebuyers invest 250 hours of “sweat equity,” working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners, in addition to paying an affordable mortgage and receiving financial education.

The sweat equity requirement takes 12-18 months. It generally takes about 1.5 to 2 years to complete the entire process, from the date of the application to the house closing.

If applicants do not meet Mon Valley Habitat’s criteria for the Homeownership Program, and are not selected, they will receive a letter with a description of the reason as to why they were not approved.

Absolutely! For questions or concerns regarding the application process, please call 304-292-0914 or email [email protected].

why we help with housing

In West Virginia, 1 in 9 households spend half or more of their income on housing. That means every day in West Virginia, families are forced to make impossible decisions just to pay their rent or mortgage. Home is peace of mind. It’s a chance to work toward security and opportunity. A decent home is sturdy and safe. An affordable home leaves financial room for other life essentials such as health care, savings, and education.
